Knights Templar in Gloucestershire
The Knights Templar played an important role in medieval Gloucestershire during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The order owned lands, farms, and estates that supported their religious and military activities. These properties generated income to fund crusades and maintain knights overseas. Templar sites in Gloucestershire were often connected to agriculture, trade routes, and local administration rather than large castles. The presence of the Templars influenced local economy and land management. After the order was dissolved in 1307, their lands were transferred to other religious institutions, leaving a lasting imprint on the county’s medieval landscape and historical memory.
