Norman Soldiers

Norman soldiers played a decisive role in the conquest and control of England following 1066. Trained for warfare, they were heavily armed and well organised, combining cavalry, infantry, and archers in disciplined formations. Norman knights fought on horseback, wearing chainmail armour and using swords, lances, and shields marked with distinctive symbols. Their military strength was supported by castles, which secured territory and enforced authority. Norman soldiers were loyal to their lords under the feudal system, fighting in return for land and protection. Their tactics, discipline, and technology gave them a significant advantage over Anglo-Saxon forces. The presence of Norman soldiers reshaped warfare in medieval England, influencing military organisation, architecture, and power structures for generations.
