Medieval Medicine

Medieval medicine was a complex blend of ancient knowledge, religious beliefs, and practical healing methods used throughout Europe during the Middle Ages. Physicians relied heavily on the teachings of Greek and Roman scholars, particularly Galen and Hippocrates, and believed that health depended on the balance of the four humors. Treatments included bloodletting, herbal remedies, special diets, and prayer. Monasteries played an important role in preserving medical knowledge and caring for the sick. Although limited by the scientific understanding of the time, medieval medicine laid important foundations for later medical developments. Its history reveals the challenges of healthcare in a changing world.
