Medieval Duel

A medieval duel was a formalized combat between two individuals, often fought to defend honor, resolve disputes, or determine guilt. Duels could take place between knights, nobles, or commoners, depending on the context. One important form was the judicial duel, where combat was believed to reveal God’s judgment. Fighters used weapons such as swords, shields, axes, or clubs, and followed specific rules overseen by officials. Victory could be achieved by death, surrender, or incapacitation. Medieval duels reflected beliefs in justice, bravery, and personal reputation, showing how violence, law, and honor were closely connected in medieval society.
