Medieval Dances

Medieval dances were an important form of entertainment and social interaction across Europe. They were performed at courts, festivals, weddings, and village celebrations, bringing together people of different social backgrounds. Courtly dances were often formal and structured, emphasizing grace and etiquette, while peasant dances were lively and energetic. Music was provided by instruments such as fiddles, flutes, drums, and bagpipes. Dancing strengthened community bonds and reflected seasonal traditions and religious festivals. Medieval dances also allowed personal expression within accepted social rules. Through art and manuscripts, these dances reveal the rhythm, joy, and cultural values of medieval society.
