Llywelyn the Great’s Final Years
The final years of Llywelyn the Great, ruler of Gwynedd, were marked by political tension, succession challenges, and efforts to secure stability in Wales. As an experienced leader, he worked to maintain his authority while negotiating with the English crown and managing internal disputes. Llywelyn sought to ensure a smooth transition of power to his chosen heir, Dafydd ap Llywelyn, strengthening alliances through diplomacy and strategic marriages. Despite growing pressures, he preserved relative peace and unity in his territories. His death in 1240 marked the end of a strong and influential reign, leaving a lasting legacy in Welsh history and identity.
