Western Heights
The Western Heights of Dover is an impressive complex of military fortifications built during the Napoleonic Wars to defend the town and harbour from invasion. Positioned high above Dover, the site includes deep dry moats, bastions, and the remarkable Grand Shaft, a triple spiral staircase designed for rapid troop movement. The Western Heights offer dramatic views across Dover and the English Channel. Today, the area is open to the public and popular with walkers, photographers, and history enthusiasts. Its powerful earthworks and commanding location provide a striking reminder of Britain’s coastal defence history.
