Swinside Stone Circle
Swinside Stone Circle, also known as Sunkenkirk, is a well-preserved Bronze Age stone circle set on open moorland near Black Combe. Dating back around 4,000 years, the circle is formed by a near-complete ring of standing stones, creating a strong sense of enclosure. Its remote location gives the site a peaceful and atmospheric character, enhanced by wide views across the surrounding landscape. Swinside is thought to have been used for ceremonial or ritual purposes by prehistoric communities. Today, it attracts walkers, photographers, and history enthusiasts seeking a quiet and powerful connection to Cumbria’s ancient past.
