Sanctuary
The Sanctuary, located near Overton Hill in Wiltshire, is an intriguing Neolithic site and part of the UNESCO World Heritage landscape of Avebury. Originally constructed around 3000 BC, it consisted of concentric rings of timber posts and later, standing stones, believed to have been used for ceremonial or ritual purposes. Connected to the Avebury stone circle by the ancient West Kennet Avenue, The Sanctuary offers visitors a chance to explore the outlines of this prehistoric monument, marked by modern concrete posts. Surrounded by the stunning Wiltshire countryside, it provides a fascinating glimpse into the rituals and beliefs of Britain’s ancient inhabitants.
