Portland Castle

Portland Castle is a well-preserved coastal fortress built by order of King Henry VIII in the 16th century. Designed to defend Portland Harbour, the castle features thick stone walls, gun ports, and commanding sea views. Its strategic position made it an important part of England’s coastal defence system. Today, visitors can explore furnished rooms, historic artillery positions, and scenic grounds overlooking the harbour. Managed by English Heritage, Portland Castle offers a fascinating insight into Tudor military architecture combined with beautiful coastal scenery and maritime history.
