Penshaw Monument

Penshaw Monument is an iconic landmark located near Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Built in 1844, this striking hilltop structure is a half-sized replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens and was erected in memory of John George Lambton, the first Earl of Durham. Standing proudly atop Penshaw Hill, the monument offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and coastline. It’s a popular destination for walkers, history lovers, and photographers. Managed by the National Trust, visitors can also climb a hidden spiral staircase (open seasonally) for even more breathtaking vistas. Penshaw Monument is a symbol of local pride and heritage.
