Othona Roman Fort
Othona Roman Fort, located near Bradwell-on-Sea in Essex, is a historic site dating back to the 3rd century AD. Originally built as part of the Roman Empire’s coastal defense system, known as the Saxon Shore Forts, Othona was strategically positioned to protect against seaborne invaders. Though much of the fort has been lost to time and erosion, the site remains significant, with remnants of its walls still visible. Nearby, the Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall, constructed in 654 AD using materials from the fort, adds to the site’s historical importance. Othona Roman Fort is a must-visit for history enthusiasts exploring Britain’s Roman heritage.
