Lanercost Priory
Lanercost Priory is a beautiful medieval Augustinian priory located near Hadrian’s Wall in northern Cumbria. Founded in the 12th century, the priory experienced frequent damage during border conflicts between England and Scotland. Despite this turbulent history, much of the church survives and is still used for worship today. The surrounding ruins, cloister, and monastic buildings create a peaceful and atmospheric setting beside the River Irthing. Managed by English Heritage, Lanercost Priory offers visitors insight into medieval monastic life, border warfare, and centuries of religious tradition in a scenic rural landscape.
