Brougham Castle

Brougham Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress located near Penrith in Cumbria, England, beside the River Eamont. It was founded in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont on the site of a Roman fort, serving as a strategic defensive stronghold. The castle was later expanded and strengthened by the Clifford family, especially during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Its impressive stone keep, curtain walls, and gatehouse remain largely intact. Today, Brougham Castle is managed as a historic site, offering visitors insight into medieval life, architecture, and the turbulent history of northern England.
